Palestine, TX Small Town Charm on a Budget

Palestine (pronounced Pah-less-teen), Texas is a quaint town in East Texas with a population of 18,000.  The small town atmosphere draws visitors from near and far.

What kind of accommodations are available in Palestine, Texas?

Hampton Inn & Suites
Hotel/Motel: I would recommend the Hampton Inn & Suites ($125/night) located at 2700 South Loop 256 Palestine, Texas. The rooms are clean & comfortable.  The indoor pool is nice for year round fun. The breakfast was fabulously FREE. The staff were friendly and welcoming. You are near Walmart, Walgreens, & CVS as well as restaurants.

Bed & Breakfast:
Sabor a Pasion Country House & Bistro is a secluded retreat that will refresh your tired spirit and body. It is located a few miles north of Palestine at 110 Anderson County Road 406 Palestine, Texas 75803. Chef Simon will prepare a breakfast unlike any you have experienced. Reservations are also available at Restaurant Aubergine for lunch or dinner.  If you are looking to get away from it all and enjoy the beauty of East Texas, Sabor a Pasion is an excellent choice!

Camping:
Campsite Texas State Railroad  Palestine
I would recommend the Texas State Railroad Palestine Campsites  ($12/night) located on Highway 84 East just 3 miles from Loop 256. There are no full service hookup sites but there is running water for each site.  You also have a dump station on site. The campsites are level and in a quiet setting. There is a playground nearby. You  can also hike a short 1/2 mile hiking trail that has a pond. Our son enjoyed riding his bicycle around the camp loop.  We liked that we could sit at our campsite and watch him ride the full loop. You are not able to make reservations.  Campsites are available on a first come first serve basis.

Lakeview Methodist Conference Center:
Lakeview Methodist Conference Center
Would you like to get away from it all and experience the great outdoors?  Lakeview is a camp setting offering facilities for groups from 2 to 1,100 people. There are 1,300 acres of wooded land, 3 lakes, & rolling hills that you and your family can enjoy.  Lakeview offers fishing, swimming, hiking, basketball courts, volleyball courts, putt putt golf, biking, & a ropes course just to name a few. The area is located south of Palestine on Texas Highway 294.  Cost ranges from $45 - $250 per night double occupancy. Day use fees are $5 per person. If you visit the Palestine area you do not want to miss Lakeview Methodist Conference Center.

Where is a good place to eat?

Rumps BBQ: 120 Farm-To-Market Rd 3328, Palestine, TX 75803
About 15 minutes west of Palestine located in what some might call "the middle of nowhere" you will find one fantastic restaurant! While Rumps specializes in BBQ they also offer fantastic sides & some great fried catfish. If you are in the area I highly recommend making the drive to Rumps for great food offered by fabulous servers & staff. (average meal cost $10)

Red Fire Grille: 400 North Queen Street Palestine, Texas
Before I begin my review of Red Fire Grille, I want to preface it with the following. Yes, I know this blog is for families who want to travel on a budget. HOWEVER, Red Fire Grille is one of the best restaurants I have ever eaten at and therefore cannot be left from my post. Chef Chrisitan Mailloux prepares a revolving menu that inspires visitors to return time and again. When we visited Red Fire Grille I had the cooked to perfection New York Strip and my husband had the crab cakes which were artfully flavored. (average meal cost is $28)

Giovanni's Italian Restaurant: 2027 West Oak Palestine, Texas
Giovanni's is quality Italian food that comes in portions big enough to share. If you are looking for an Italian meal or just a pizza, you will not be disappointed at Giovanni's. I highly recommend the chicken aristocrat. (average meal cost is $12)

Oxbox Bakery & Antiques: 215 East Crawford Street Palestine, Texas
No visit to Palestine is complete without stopping in for some of the best pie (I like chocolate) you will ever eat! Oxbow Bakery is located in historic Old Town Palestine.  After you finish your pie, walk it off as you visit other shops in the area.

Eilenberger Bakery: 512 North John Street Palestine, Texas
This bakery first opened in 1898 and has become legendary near and far.  Featured in Southern Living magazine as one of the best bakeries in the south, you do not want to miss this treat when visiting Palestine. Try the gooey bars - you will not be disappointed.

Davey Dogwood Park
This 254 acre park on the north side of Palestine at 900 North Link Street is best seen during the spring during Palestine's Dogwood Festival. Drive through this beautiful park the last two weekends in March.

Enjoy a Small Town Festival:
Palestine hosts two festivals each year, Texas Dogwood Trails Festival and the Hot Pepper Festival. The Texas Dogwood Trails Festival takes place the last two weekends in March & the first weekend in April - during the height of dogwood trees blooming. The Hot Pepper Festival takes place the last Saturday in October and features live bands, pepper eating contests, Dogwood Jamboree, & good ol' small town charm. Enjoy a scenic drive:

  • FM 322 south to Texas State Highway 294.  Take a right on Texas State Highway 294 and travel past Lakeview Methodist Conference Center (400 PR 6036 Palestine, TX). I highly recommend visiting Lakeview at least for 1/2 a day if not longer. After leaving Lakeview take a right on Texas State Highway 294 and travel approximately 3 miles and turn right onto FM 1990. FM 1990 will take you back into Palestine.
  • Texas State Highway 19 north to Athens, Texas (approximately 35 miles) is another beautiful drive. In Athens visit the Texas Fresh Water Fishery.  Your kids will love fishing in the pond, the dive show, the tram tour, hiking, and learning about the hatchery. Cost $5.50 adults & $3.50 for kids aged 4-12. Plan to spend at least 1/2 day here.

Fire Mountain Amusement is a great place to ride go-karts, bumper boats, & play games. It is located south of Tyler at 14722 Highway 155 South. Tyler has several movie theaters.  I recommend Times Square Movie Theater for an indoor theater and Skyvu Drive-in for a drive-in movie theater.  While not state of the art theaters, both are budget friendly and stand out among typical movie theaters.
  • Shopping Centers: Broadway Square Mall located at the corner of highway 69 (Broadway) and Loop 323 is a Simon Mall with 80 stores for your shopping enjoyment.  The Village at Cumberland Park is Tyler's newest shopping center with new stores being added monthly.  If you prefer antiques and boutiques The Potpourri House is for you!

Disney World on a Budget - My Best Tips

Disney World Epcot
Hello! I am a mom and a wife who has a confession to make. I am addicted to Disney World vacations. There I said it... As you read the information I have in my blog, keep in mind I have spent countless hours researching so my family will have a magical vacation. My family consists of my husband, my 11 year old son, and myself. We have visited Disney World 3 times since 2008. Each time we visit we find something we have not seen before. As we plan for our 4th trip to Disney World, we are just as excited as we were for the first trip! Read my blog to discover how your family can visit Disney without breaking your budget.

I think what makes Disney World so magical is there is something for everyone - thereby making everyone happy!  Do you want a 0 to 60 mph experience or do you prefer the slow moving It's A Small World or something in between?  Do you want Broadway caliber theatrical productions or to simply sing and dance with Disney Junior stars?  Disney delivers all of this and so much more.  This is why I choose to take my family back time and again!

So you have chosen to find a little magic at Disney World? Listed below are some of my favorite tips/ideas I have seen over the years of planning trips to Disney World. I hope it helps to make your trip every bit as magical as mine.

NEW TIP - You can move between theme parks using Disney transportation even if you are not staying at a Disney hotel. Plan 1  to 1 1/2 hours to move between parks on a busy day.
Magic Kingdom park & Epcot are connected via monorail
Epcot & Disney's Hollywood Studios are connected via boat
Magic Kingdom park & Disney's Hollywood Studios are connected via bus
Disney's Animal Kingdom theme park is connected to the 3 other theme parks via bus.
NEW TIP - You can use someone else's Disney MagicBand or park ticket for Fastpass+. For example you can use your son's MagicBand for a FastPass+ that he does not want to ride.  The only time the MagicBand must be on the correct person is at the park entrance.
Sam's Club has Disney Gift Cards at a discount. You can get $150 worth of cards for $142.88. I used them to pay for my hotel room and bought some extra to use on the trip. I saved $160 using the gift cards.
You will need a minimum of 1 day per theme park at Disney World and there are 4 parks! Plan to spend at least 5 days at Disney World.
The more days you spend at Disney World, the lower the daily ticket price becomes.
If you are celebrating something while at Disney World, make sure you go by guest services or tell the desk clerk at check in so you can get your FREE Disney pin for your celebration. Wear the pin around the park where you will be greeted by cast members as well as potentially get a FREE cupcake or dessert in honor of your celebration.
If you are on the dining plan you will want to make reservations as soon as you can so you eat at the best Disney restaurants.
You can send a letter to the this address: BEFORE the trip and a character will send you a postcard: Walt Disney World Communications P.O. Box 10040 Lake Buena Vista, FL 32830-0040
Create a My Disney Experience account. Download the app on your smart phone as well. You will need it for FastPass+ as well as other planning. FastPass+ will make your trip much more enjoyable since you will not have to stand in line.
3-5 days BEFORE you are scheduled to check-in CALL the Disney hotel you are staying in and request the building you would like to have a room in. If you have the dining plan you will have the free refillable mug and you won't want to have to walk FOREVER to fill it up from your room. You can research which building has your type room in it at http://wdwprepschool.com/how-to-get-the-disney-world-resort-room-requests-views-rooms/
Dollar Tree is a good place to buy Disney stuff such as buy glow sticks. Take the glow sticks with you for the Electric Parade and fireworks. The kids will LOVE it! You could probably even find a small Disney theme spiral that would be great for getting character autographs. Buy a RETRACTABLE sharpie the large size because that is easier for the characters to hold on to when signing your autograph book.
Another idea for autograph book is to use the Disney Junior Encyclopedia. This book has pictures & facts for of over 150 Disney characters. We had the characters sign their own picture when we met them at Disney World.. You can buy it at Amazon or Walmart online for $10. Check out our Merchandise page.
Get your souveneirs from the outlet mall right at the Disney exit. There is a Disney Outlet store in there that sells Disney Park merchandise for a fraction of the cost in the park.
WEAR COMFORTABLE SHOES & CLOTHES & LOTS OF SUNSCREEN.. The last thing you want is to have blisters and sunburn after a day at the park.
It rains every afternoon in Florida - don't leave the park because of rain, others will do that leaving the whole park to you!. Get ponchos at Walmart before the trip. Take a sharpie or permanent paint and paint some identifiable logo on the back of the parka. EVERYONE at Disney has the same parkas and it's hard to find your family in the crowd.
We usually take 1 backpack into the park with us so we can keep the parkas & autograph books etc in there.
Buy Gatoraide or KoolAid in the packets so you can add it to the water if you or your kids don't like plain water. You will dehydrate FAST drinking only sodas at Disney.
Take non-perishable snacks like beef jerky or trail mix into the park so you can save money on snacks.
When you are eligible for signing up for the FastPass+ do it. Don't wait until you get to the park to get them. You don't have the option to FastPass+ all attractionss so you will have to look and see which you are most interested in seeing. See my blog about FastPass+ for more details.
If you are staying at a Disney hotel, it will have lots of activities going on throughout the day and evening - plan to spend at least one afternoon or evening enjoying those amenities.
The crowds start arriving at the parks around 11 AM. IF you are early risers you can beat some of the crowds by getting there early. IF you are night owls then you could stay late, if there are Extra Magic Hours. Some people leave the park mid afternoon and go back to their hotel to swim etc. then go back to the park later in the afternoon. I have never done this but think I might try it this year.. Just remember traveling from the theme parks to your hotel and back will take a lot of time out of your day.
Water is FREE at any theme park. Just go up to the counter and ask for it.
There is a place in Epcot called Club Cool in Future World where you get free samples of Coca Cola from around the world. DO NOT try Beverly - you have been warned...
It will usually take 1 hour to get from your hotel room into the park. So if you want to get to the park at 9 AM you should plan to leave the hotel room no later than 8 AM. This is excluding hotels on the monorail.
After the fireworks in the theme park each night people try to bolt to the exit to try and be first in line for the bus back to the hotel. If you need to get back to your hotel fast then choose a spot to watch the fireworks that is near the exit, otherwise just spend a little time in the park after the fireworks just going through some of the shops or getting some ice cream.
I have read A LOT on Disney World and this year I am going to avoid the Extra Magic hours for most of my days at Disney. UNLESS you bought the Park Hopper option & can leave the park then I believe you will have bigger crowds to deal with if you go to the park with Extra Magic Hours. It's a theory that I am testing this time - we have always tried to visit the Extra Magic hours park in the past and found especially Magic Kingdom to be unbelievably packed that day... - I will update my blog after this trip and let you know if my plan worked. UPDATE: We did not find the parks to be overly crowded when we visited on non-extra magic hour days.  In the future I plan to avoid the theme parks with extra magic hours UNLESS I have park hopper.
You can only get Dole Whips in Magic Kingdom by the Jungle Cruise ride. It is soft serve ice cream that is great! (and only found at Disney World) UPDATE: I received a FREE Dole Whip on my birthday just because I happened to have my birthday button on & a Disney Cast member saw the button.  The cast member walked up to me & gave it to me.
We first visited Disney World when my son was 4 years old. He did not know our cell phone numbers. So I made a badge with his name, our cell phone #s, the hotel we were staying at, ect. and put it inside a clear plastic badge holder with a safety pin back that I purchased at Office Depot. I then pinned the badge to the inside of his pants pocket. THANKFULLY he never needed it, but it was there if he did need it.
You can purchase Disney PhotoPass BEFORE you arrive at Disney World for $169. If you wait until you arrrive at Disney World the cost will be $199.
The Disney PhotoPass photographers will take a picture of you with your camera too - even if you have not purchased the PhotoPass option.
Don't follow the crowd! If the crowd is moving clockwise go counter clockwise and vice versa. Try starting at the back of the theme park and come to the front.
At Magic Kingdom arrive at rope drop and ride the WDW Railroad around to Frontierland or Fantasyland and head back to the front of the park. You should miss most of the crowds. I tried it on my trip in 2015 & it worked!
At Magic Kingdom take the time to go to Tom Sawyer's Island. It is a great escape from the crowds and your kids will LOVE going through the caves and over foot bridges.
Use the single rider option on rides that allow you to do so. It will save you a lot of time if you don't have to ride with your entire party.
During the summer at Hollywood Studios go to the early Lights, Camera, Action show. The stadium really heats up as the afternoon gets later.
During the summer at Animal Kingdom, plan to see Lion King & Nemo in the afternoon. Both shows are air conditioned and it will be nice to get a break from the heat.
During the summer at Animal Kingdom, visit Kilimanjaro Safari early in the morning before the day heats up. More animals are out and moving around in the morning.
At Animal Kingdom take time to walk the Discovery Island Trails, Pangani Forest Trail, & the Maharajah Jungle Trek. They are similar to a zoo with lots of animals and habitats to see.
To make Epcot World Showcase interesting to children complete the FREE Kidcot stations at each country. Your children will have the opportunity to color a mask and get a stamp from each country while visiting with a native from the country.
Epcot has a FREE (with daily admission ticket) adventure called Agent P's World Showcase. You are given a cell phone-like device and you must go around the world showcase finding clues. This is a great way to keep tweens interested in the world showcase. My son had fun completing the activities.
Magic Kingdom has the Sorcerer's of the Magic Kingdom game. You get FREE packets of cards with different Disney characters on them. You then take the cards to locations around the park and unlock your next clue. The cards are one of a kind souvenirs! My husband and son had a blast collecting the cards and playing the game. Visit the Firehouse on Main Street, U.S.A. or behind the Ye Olde Christmas Shoppe in Liberty Square, where you’ll be given all the tools you’ll need to help you on your quest.
Disney's Fort Wilderness Campgrounds has FREE Chip 'N Dale Campfire sing-a-long followed by a classic Disney movie EVERY NIGHT. Your child will get to meet Chip & Dale and then watch a movie. Normally character meals are $30+ but this one is FREE for everyone - not just Disney resort guests.
Take time to ride around the monorail. Even visit a resort or two that is on the monorail. Haven't you always wondered just how "grand" the Grand Floridian is?
Don't think you will see it all in one visit. I believe you could spend a month and not see it all. Just enjoy your time together and let the "magic" of Disney be yours.

Disney World on a Budget - Transportation

Disney World is massive in size at 40 square miles! How do you maneuver such a large area? Disney World has a wonderful transportation system that will move you around the area.

Disney Resort Hotel Guests: If you are staying at a Disney resort hotel having a vehicle is not a priority.  Disney will pick you up at the airport and take you to your hotel using Disney Magical Express. Magical Express will also take you back to the airport at the end of your stay.  Each day Disney transportation will transport you from your hotel to Disney theme parks, water parks, and Downtown Disney at NO ADDITIONAL CHARGE. Your transportation options range from bus, monorail, and/or boat depending on the resort you choose to stay in. Transportation usually starts 1-2 hours before theme parks open and continue throughout the day up until 1-2 hours after the park closes. Check with your hotel front desk for transportation schedules when you check in. Using this system you will not have to worry about traffic, parking, or remembering where you parked your car! To find out more about the Disney Transportation System click here.
If you choose to drive yourself to a Disney theme park you have FREE parking at any theme park throughout your stay.

Non-Disney Resort Hotel Guests: So you decided not to stay on Disney property? Did you know you can still use the transportation system? Did you know it's FREE? Yes! You can catch any bus, boat, or monorail from any theme park and ride it to a Disney hotel or theme park of your choice. If you are needing to get to Downtown Disney you will select a bus to a Disney hotel and then from the hotel you will catch a bus or boat from the hotel to that Downtown Disney.  This option sounds great right? Well, this trip I just explained will take you between 1 - 2 hours to complete ONE WAY depending on how fast you catch a bus, boat, or monorail. To find out more about the Disney Transportation System click here.
Most hotels in the Disney World area will transport you to a theme park at certain times of the day. You will need to check with that hotel about pick up and drop off times. If you drive your own vehicle, the cost to park at any Disney theme park is currently $17 per day good for all day at any of Disney's theme parks.

Disney World on a Budget - Getting There

We flew AirTran which is now a branch of Southwest Airlines.
Depending on where you live, you can either drive or fly to Disney World. I live in Texas, approximately 1,100 miles from Disney World.  My family has traveled to Disney World both ways.  There are advantages and disadvantages to each method of travel. This posting will give you more details about each method so you can make an informed choice about travel for your family.

Flying to Disney World
Is your family limited on time off for vacation?  Do your children/spouse struggle riding in cars for long periods of time? Do you want to get to Disney World the fastest way possible? If so, then flying might be the best choice for your family.

I started watching airline prices to Orlando, Florida 6 months prior to purchasing my tickets so I would know prices and what was a good deal. A good site to keep up with fares is Google Flights. I like Google Flights because I am able to see many different airlines and rates.  It will even tell me if another nearby airport is cheaper to fly out of. Another site I use when searching for airfare deals is Fare Compare . The deals site on the Fare Compare website shows the latest airline sales on many airlines. Everything I read said the best time to buy an airline ticket is 6 weeks before departure. The cheapest days of the week to fly are Tuesday, Wednesday, & Saturday. The first flight out for the day is typically the least expensive.  If you are early birds then this could save you hundreds of dollars. As you are searching for flights, you might consider flying into Tampa International Airport and renting a car.  Sometimes rates are considerably less expensive than flying into Orlando - just don't forget to factor in the cost of the rental car and perhaps parking at your hotel, if it is not a Disney hotel.
  • Advantages of flying to Disney World:
    1. Disney Magical Express - This is a BIG advantage! If you are staying at a Disney World resort hotel you have the option of using Disney Magical Express. Disney offers FREE transportation to and from Orlando International Airport, meaning you don't have to rent a car.  In addition luggage delivery to your Disney resort hotel is FREE too! You just check your luggage at your home airport and then you don't see them again until you arrive in your room.  It is just MAGICAL!
    2. If you live a substantial distance from Disney World flying is MUCH faster than driving. (Even with the added time it takes to get through airport security these days.)
    3. Your vehicle is not getting added miles on the odometer.
    4. Disney Magical Express

    5. You do not have to worry about lodging for the trip to and from Orlando.
  • Disadvantages of flying to Disney World:
    1. Flying is EXPENSIVE - especially if you have a large family. The best deals I have been able to find (other than on airlines such as Spirit) in 2015 was $199 per person round trip from Austin, TX to Orlando, FL. If I were to fly from Dallas or Houston the rates are averaging $285 per person round trip.  Oh yeah, you will also have to pay a fee (averaging $25 for the first bag & more for each additional bag) for your checked luggage to fly unless you fly certain airlines like Southwest or JetBlue. Did I mention gas prices are currently hovering around $2.25 per gallon?  My car can go a long way for what it costs for just one person in my family to fly to Orlando.
    2. Airport security - gone are the days where you walk into the airport and go to your boarding location and then get on the plane.  It is recommended that you arrive at the airport no less than 2 hours before departure for domestic flights. Once at the airport you will be subjected to long lines, rude people, metal detectors, and having to disrobe - well just your shoes but hey it's annoying!
    3. Rules, rules, rules!! Every airline has different policies about the size of checked luggage permitted without an added fee on top of the fee you paid to have your luggage fly. Then of course there are the rules about carry on luggage. Oh and don't let me forget the rules about liquids and carry on bags.  But wait as if there weren't enough rules, don't forget each person is limited to one quart size Ziploc bag for your liquids. Oh yeah, tell your husband NOT to leave his $50 pocket knife in his pocket when he goes through airport security or he will never see it again.
    4. Seat size - in an effort to make more money airlines have been cramming more seats on a plane.  That's great for them and AWFUL for you!  The average airline seat is now between 16.5" and 18" wide with a 32" pitch. Basically you will be sitting right on top of the person next to you. Oh yeah, did I mention that if you want to select which seats your family receives (so you can all sit together on the plane) that will cost you more money on many airlines today?
    5. Annoying people on the plane - you just want to sleep so you will be rested when you get to Disney World.  HOWEVER, the 2 year old behind you is crying and kicking the back of your seat pushing you into the stranger (who has a flu like cough) sitting next to you. At least if you had driven, you could turn around and yell at the annoying 2 year old because he or she is your child!
Driving to Disney World
Is your family on a budget? Do you enjoy seeing the different parts of the country? Do you have a fear of flying? If so then maybe driving to Disney World is for your family!

Being the planner that I am I use Google Maps to plot my trip when I am driving to a destination. Google Maps even has a neat feature that will allow you to see street view.  I use this feature to see the neighborhood where the hotel I am considering is located. I learned a long time ago if there are pay day loan & pawn shops within a mile of your hotel you probably want to avoid the hotel. (It was San Antonio... just glad we made it out alive.)

  • Advantages of driving to Disney World:

    1. Cost - For the budget minded family the expense of flying is not a feasible option.  Therefore we are left to drive.  When gas prices are low, as they are in 2015, it makes financial sense to drive IF you have the time to make the drive.
    2. See the world - You have the opportunity to see parts of the United States you have never seen before at your own pace. You can even visit websites like Road Trip America and plan your road trip so you don't miss the world's largest ball of yarn or some other great adventure you never knew existed.
    3. Family time - good or bad road trips are memorable family adventures that will be repeated at family gatherings for the next 30 years!
    4. You can pack as much as your vehicle will hold, including food and drinks.  Try doing that on an airplane!
    5. Did I mention NO AIRPORT HASSLES - see my posting above...
    6. The only smelly & annoying people you will be traveling with are your family.

    • Disadvantages of driving to Disney World:
      1. Time - If you live quite a distance from Disney World, you are looking at a lot of time to get there if you drive.
      2. Lodging expense: Unless your family can drive 15+ hours straight through and still have the energy to maneuver Disney World when you arrive, you will have lodging expenses on your road trip.  I usually avoid hotel costs because I have hotel reward points I have accumulated during my travels during the year. On my Disney World road trip I cash those points in so I get a FREE hotel room. Tip for the budget conscious family: SIGN UP FOR EVERY HOTEL REWARDS PROGRAM YOU CAN.  Hotel rewards programs are FREE and you can accumulate points quickly if you travel during their promotional times.  When I don't have FREE hotels, I use Google Hotel finder to find the best room rates. I don't use online travel agencies such as Expedia, Hotels.com, or Priceline because I have read too many blog posts about how rooms weren't booked as promised or the Priceline room was a real dump or the price was higher than anticipated, etc. I usually try to drive to within 4-5 hours of Disney World to spend the night.  For me that is around Tallahassee, Florida. That way I can be at Disney World by 11 AM the next day and have almost a full day to enjoy the parks.
      3. If you are staying at a Disney resort hotel you really do not need a car.  Disney will take you where you want to go for FREE! Thankfully you will not be charged a fee to park your car at your Disney resort hotel.
      4. Some family members just don't ride in a vehicle well. If hours on in with the same people sounds like a new form of torture then maybe the road trip is not for you.
